Using Balance Transfer Credit Cards for Purchases
Is it a good idea to use a balance transfer credit card for purchases? In many cases, the answer to this question is a simple "no." The main reason is the most attractive balance transfer offers, the ones with the longest 0% terms, have shorter intro periods for purchases. It's a give and take situation. Just as when you're shopping for a car, the bigger the car, the lower the fuel efficiency. The same types of principles in most cases apply to credit cards. The longer the APR term for balance transfers, the shorter for purchases. This holds true almost universally for offers that come with very long intro rates.

There are exceptions to the rule and you will see many credit cards with 0% transfer and purchase rates available. There are some offers that come with long terms for both, though not with the longest of 0% transfer terms. An example of this is the Discover More Card that offers 0% for both transfers and purchases for 15 months. Is this a great deal? Yes it is. However, it's not the best balance transfer credit card because it won't result in the greatest savings, or at least savings potential. The go-to pricing structure is the same as the 18 month offer, and yes, it does offer 15 months instead of 6 months for purchases. But, if your main objective is to save money on interest from an existing debt and are trying to decide between two different cards with similar go-to rates, the one with the longest 0% rate for balance transfers is going to be the one that results in the most savings if you treat both cards equally from a payment standpoint.

Let's say that you wanted to make purchases on that new card. In that case, the deal that offers longer intro periods on both could be the better deal, but then again it could be trouble. It makes more sense in most cases to apply for two different cards, one for the transfer and one for purchases if this is your intention. This is the case as balance transfer cards are designed to be attractive for one thing: saving money with balance transfers. Cards used for purchases have their own attributes that make them attractive based on that centralized use.

The approach that many will employ is to apply for one card to transfer their balance to and then apply for another for purchases.  This is a much better strategy than apply for a 0% balance transfer rewards card (a balance transfer card with cash back, miles, etc.) as it allows elimination of debt without accruing more on the same account. The one caveat is that you may not be able to carry multiple cards from the same issuer (some do not allow this). However, certain portfolios have different strengths and weaknesses. American Express for example, in our opinion is strongest in the points rewards program while Chase is providing extremely purchase-friendly cash back programs with their Freedom cards. You should be able to find multiple offers for your needs from different issuers and keep in mind that just because a 0% balance transfer credit card may be great for eliminating existing debt, it may not be your best option if you use it for purchases.
