Credit Cards with EMV Chips for International Travel
Many people who travel internationally have come across problems with acceptance of their traditional magnetic stripe credit cards. This is because several countries outside of the U.S. require smart card technology, or EMV chips. To meet these standards, United States credit card issuers are beginning to provide EMV chips on some of their cards. Some cards automatically will come with a chip embedded within the card when it is issued while others require a request for the feature. Below are credit cards with these capabilities and explanation of how the process works.
Citi ThankYou Premier Card: This offer comes with an EMV chip when issued. The card also does not charge foreign transaction fees which typically run from 2-4% when applicable.

Additional Information Regarding EMV Cards for International Travel
Certain issuers are currently providing cards with the technology by request or have plans to roll out their offers later on in the year or in 2013. Discover's, Bank of America's, and those for American Express have been covered at Credit Card Education by our investigative team. Travelers who plan on going abroad with an offer from one of those issuers should contact the respective issuing bank if they are interested in finding out more about their product's EMV capabilities.
